Besides the surveillance of undergound cavities and caverns, SOCON Sonar Control Kavernenvermessung GmbH has been carrying out geodetic surveying and mapping work since 1993. These operations are headed in the company by a recognized mining surveyor, which means that all kinds of geodetic surveying and mapping work can be carried out for cavern operations, in particular the preparation and updating of the legally required sections and plans. The geodetic surveying and mapping activities comprise amongst others the monitoring of the surface to detemine if and what ground subsidence has occurred. For performing the fine levelling work necessarily associated with this, state-of-the-art survey equipment (e.g. digital levelling instruments from LEICA and ZEISS) is applied that allows extremely accurate measurements to be made. In addition, any kind of location surveys can be carried out and cartographic displays of the surface situation as well as location maps for mining authorization in accordance with federal mining law prepared. SOCON is therefore in a position to carry out all surveys that are needed in cavern field operations. All geodetic surveying and mapping work is carried out using the SOCON computer-aided information system of KARISDAT (which stands for cavern mapping system referred to a database). This AutoCAD-based system facilitates efficient and forward-looking working procedures and is accepted by the mining authorities for computer-aided mapping. |

Permanent further devlopment over recent years has advanced KARISDAT to a high performance system with options that go far beyond the preparation of maps as required by mining law. The KARISDAT-SUB module enables the anticipated future ground movement above cavern fields to be predicted. This prediction is based on influencing functions, whereby the required parameters (e.g. limit angle, specific cavern convergence and so on) can be derived from the KARISDAT database. Besides the subsidence it is possible to calculate predictions of ground movement elements such as subsidence slope, curvature, horizontal displacement as well as compression and extension. A newly developed module is available for GIS applications (Geographic Information System), namely KARISDAT-GIS. This module is built up on Autodesk Map, an AutoCAD-based product for setting up professional GIS systems. Using this module any type of GIS application can be created either by our software development team or by the user himself. KARISDAT is currently being applied in the following cavern fields:
