| One evening two worlds meet up - a mysterious underground world, accessible to us thanks only to technology, and the non-material world from which dreams originate. Is it possible to transmit sounds down into a vast methane-gas-filled cavern with a volume of more than 300,000 m?? And if so, how do sounds behave in methane gas at a pressure of 100 bar? Oscar Wiggli - composer and sculptor - put these and other questions in 1994 in Bochum, Germany to the cavern specialist Hartmut von Tryller, managing director of SOCON, an internationally operating cavern surveying company.
The artist and the manager, both curious and at the same time fascinated, commenced work together on the experiment to get answers to a whole range of questions. This book shows how this experiment, which seemed quite impossible in the beginning, slowly took on shape and was eventually carried out in spring 1998.
The sounds created during this experiment provided Oscar Wiggli with raw material for various compositions, which have been released on CD under the title of GUAREC. In the accompanying booklet the composer talks about his compositions (with text by Hartmut von Tryller and Oscar Wiggli).
